They came to rape, pillage and murder but they were not prepared for the calm wrath of Marlina the Murderer. In search of justice, Marlina traverses the desert landscape, along with a machete and the head of one who has wronged her. While on her journey, many obstacles impede in her righteous path: a histrionic pregnant neighbor, looters in search of their missing comrades, a little girl mature beyond her years longing for a maternal figure. Nodding to the artful Westerns of Sam Peckinpah and Quentin Tarantino, Director Mouly Surya approaches the genre with her own steady contemplation, fruitful eye and feminine hand. MARLINA crafts an immersive world heightened by a persistent, Ennio Morricone inspired soundtrack and sweeping visual compositions bringing the rape revenge genre to new artistic, empowering heights. Not for the weak, nor the weak of heart.
Born in Jakarta in 1980, Mouly Surya is considered one of the most promising female filmmakers in Indonesia. Since studying film in Australia, Surya has made three feature films, winning awards and playing many esteemed festivals including Rotterdam, Sundance, Busan and IFF. MARLINA premiered at the 2017 Director’s Fortnight at Cannes and made its North American premiere at TIFF 2017.
