Director Sekiya Dorsett’s road-trip style documentary follows The Revival, queer women of color bringing their poetry, song and conversation to audiences across the country. These women explore the world through the power of the written word, using their lives to engage in a dialogue of discovery, honesty and acceptance. The film moves beyond simple portraiture into larger issues of self expression, gender, race and sexuality, themes enriched by insightful interviews with leading Black feminist thinkers and historians, including Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Nikky Finney, and Alexis De Veaux. THE REVIVAL is a rare glimpse into a special sisterhood that amplifies marginalized voices, using community to broadcast an entire movement reverberating with possibility.
Born in Nassau, Bahamas, Sekiya Dorsett is a queer filmmaker giving voice to issues of equality. With themes of identity and understanding, her short films have played NewFest Film Festival, Oakland Black LGBT Festival and others. By day she is a Writer/Producer/Editor, where she has created work for LOGO TV and NBC Universal.
