Citizen Jane is a year-round initiative created to support and celebrate women filmmakers. Citizen Jane has grown out of a collaboration with the Stephens College digital film department, one of the only “hands-on” filmmaking departments for women in the country. Stephens College, one of the oldest women’s colleges in the nation has been supporting and empowering women for almost two hundred years.
Citizen Jane hosts the Citizen Jane Summer Film Academy in collaboration with Columbia Public Schools to teach young women the tools to tell their unique stories. During the month of June CJ teaches young women how to make their own media through music videos, short films and PSA’s that are shown at the film festival.
Citizen Jane also presents the CJ Film Series sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, bringing filmmakers and their films to Columbia for free, public showings and intimate Q and A’s with the filmmaker. Filmmakers also host Master classes and conduct class visits at Stephens.
