Kathleen McGee Anderson (Playwright/Writer/Producer) was the first guest of the CJ Film Series 2015. She screened her film ‘The Color of Courage’, a narrative film that she wrote about her grandparents and the landmark civil rights case, Sipes v McGhee. Kathleen also spoke with us candidly about working in Hollywood and staying true to yourself and your creativity in a workshop called, “Learning to Speak Your Truth”.

The only proven path to independence as an artist is a direct connection to your audience. Crowdfunding is becoming a fundamental piece of most financing plans for independent film. However, many filmmakers miss the opportunity to turn their film funding campaigns into audience-building opportunities that can last an entire career — and provide the groundwork for distribution that the filmmaker controls. This Crowdfunding to Build Independence Workshop for film-related projects will provide the crowdfunding action plan most likely to create a lasting, flourishing, direct relationship with your audience.

Where do stories come from? How do we develop them from script to screen? How do we overcome the obstacles? Hear the behind the scenes stories of the films at Citizen Jane and what inspired them. Clips of festival films are played.

Hear from those who select films at other festivals and from those who have won some of the most selective film grants/scholarships/awards in the nation talk about the process and how they got there. They will talk about how their work got to the next level, or if they are the one making the selection, what makes them choose one film project over another. An honest discussion about opportunities in filmmaking with clips from films of the festival are played.

Filmmaking is a highly collaborative art form and these panelists share their stories on how they work together and how collaboration influences their work. Panelists range from artists working in a collective, a-la-60s-style, to traditional director/producer collaborators. Frank talk on the wonders and challenges of working with fellow human beings as well as investigating the dangerous question, “do women work differently” will be part of this conversation.

The life of an independent filmmaker involves much more than making movies. It involves paying the bills and if lucky, the combination of both. Listen to some of CJFF 2013’s filmmakers, from different backgrounds and different countries talk about how they spend a typical day on the job and how they make their films. You’ll also get a glimpse of the films they have brought to the festival this year.

The rise of social media has changed every aspect of filmmaking today, from fundraising to distribution and everything in between. Not only has it altered how we make films, but also how we consume films. This panel features filmmakers who are using social media in innovative ways and will share practical and frank advice and stories on what works and what doesn’t in the constantly evolving new world we live and work in.
