Behind the Scenes of Citizen Jane: Kerri Yost

One of the creators of the festival, Kerri Yost has served CJFF in too many ways to count.--Paula Elias and I are co-directors of CJFF. We work on it throughout the year, basically. We do try to divide and conquer, each doing specific jobs. We get to see the whole festival from beginning to end, development and execution. In general, my role is fundraising--like right now I have a lot of reports for grants that fund our festival, so it's the ... Read more

Behind the Scenes of Citizen Jane: Cozette Lehman

It's simple. Cozette Lehman: code for CJFF jack of all trades with ideas coming out of her ears. What has been your job for Citizen Jane? You gave the festival a "face," but you do much more... Technically, I was CJFF's graphic designer, responsible for reinterpreting the festival'sexisting design concept (created by Tiny Circus) into myriad materials (festival program, ads, poster, etc.). I had the general idea of what I'd be producing when I accepted the gig, but there's always "the little extras" ... Read more

"The Rule" done by cartoonist Alison Bechdel is the creation of Bechdel test. Sadly even 23 years after the fact several movies don't pass this test. Next time you are at a movie you should see if it passes the Bechdel test and sice several women's centered films have come out or will be coming out soon this could be an interesting challenge. Good movie watching. Read more

Citizen Jane featured some very unique shorts programs this year, including "The Secret Life of Girls: CJFF Youth Media Program," and "Portraits: Short Films That Say a Thousand Words." I was lucky enough to talk with its director, Leah Cheaney. So, what exactly is the youth media program, and what prompted you to create it? The youth media program selects and highlights films made by women 18 and under. A selection of about 20 short films was shown during the festival; several of these ... Read more
