Fanservice

Her eyes are up here bro. Ah, fanservice. No matter your gender or sexual orientation, there is no escaping you. You permeate every corner of media and entertainment, from video games to tv to comic books to yes, even films. Hurrah. Most of you are probably familiar with fanservice, but for those of you who don't know, fanservice is when an image or action (usually a girl in a bikini) is portrayed in such a way to be purposefully titillating to fans. Hence ... Read more

The Gatekeepers of Film: Film Critics (and why we need more female film critics)

This time of year is very predictable in the feminist female filmmaking realm.  We're hitting the end and highest peak of the major festival season with Cannes wrapping up over the pond, and as usual, there is a distasteful sexist atmosphere to the Cannes culture.  But I won't write about this since I could easily cut and past past my blogs from last year's Cannes or the year before, and on and on.  Nothing has changed, including the lame defense that ... Tour de Femme: Nichelle Nichols

The master at work. Today we get to talk about two of my favorite things: strong women and Star Trek. Star Trek is famous for being ahead of it's time. With the main cast comprised a Russian, a Japanese man, and a black woman, Star Trek dealt with philosophical subjects concerning just about everything, from the duality of human nature, to the place of love in society and it's a show that has been doing that for almost fifty years. That's not to say that ... Tour de Femme: Julie d’Aubigny

Aw yis. If you're reading this, congratulations! You're reading Tour de Femme, a weekly blog post about the awesome women who've come before us. With a different subject every week, what's not to love? There are tons of badass women to look up to! And Citizen Jane wants to honor them all. No, real ones! What better way to start out our weekly posts than with Julie d'Aubigny, a French swordsmaster and opera star. You heard me. Woman could sing and work a sword. She has a rapier ... Read more

Brave Follow Up or The Thing About Princesses

Ugh. I don't know if you guys have seen yet but Disney heard the message loud and clear and Merida is back to the old design! And only after a change.org petition and a statement from Merida's creator, Brenda Chapman. Progress! As great as it is that Disney has changed Merida back to the original design, this isn't the first redesign they've done and Merida isn't the first princess they've changed to fit the "sexier" mold. In fact, recently all the princesses have been given ... Read more

If you loved Brave, you will hate this…

Before                            AfterDisney has redesigned the "Merida" doll from the movie "Brave". And the fans are not happy. Brave, created, written and originally directed by Brenda Chapman, is believed by many to feature the first feminist Disney character.Just in time for Merida's induction into the canon of Disney Princesses, the redesign makes her look older and I would say sexier but the original looks like a young girl and fortunately is not sexy at all. The new "Merida" has a chiseled waist, ... Read more

Some good films…Sarasota Film Festival

Had the chance to go to the Sarasota Film Festival a couple of weeks ago. I had been hearing from several people that it was a very female-friendly festival and that I should check it out. Besides the fact that they have partnered with Through Women's Eyes by the USNC for UN Women for the third year in a row to feature 2 days of films made by women, their over all programming is chock full of a lot of incredible ...
